Military TAF vs Civilian TAF: What Changes and What Does Not

Military TAF vs civilian TAF sounds like it should be a long list of differences. It is a short one, and it sits almost entirely at the end of the message.

The body of the forecast is the same product. What a military TAF adds is a trailer of extra groups and a set of remarks about the forecasting service.

What stays exactly the same

Everything you already know about reading a TAF still applies.

The header carries the station, the issue time and the valid period. The body gives wind, visibility, weather and cloud in the same order and the same codes. The change groups are the same four: FM, TEMPO, BECMG and the PROB groups.

Flight categories are worked out the same way, from the ceiling and the visibility, taking the worse of the two. A BKN008 in a military forecast means what it means anywhere else.

So a pilot who can read a civil TAF can already read four fifths of a military one, and can read the part that matters most for a go or no-go decision.

What gets added at the end

The trailer is where the extra work is. Three groups turn up there regularly.

The turbulence group opens with the digit 5. 510005 is light turbulence from the surface to 5000 feet. Six digits: marker, intensity, base in hundreds, thickness in thousands.

The icing group opens with the digit 6 and uses the identical frame. 620105 is light rime icing in cloud, from 1000 to 6000 feet. One digit carries both the intensity and the ice type.

The altimeter group is written out rather than coded. QNH2992INS is an altimeter setting of 29.92 inches of mercury, with INS marking the unit.

A trailer often carries all three in a row, and the leading character of each tells you which is which.

Why the military encodes hazards the civil world does not

This looks like duplication until you consider who the forecast is for.

Civil aviation gets icing and turbulence from area products. AIRMET Zulu covers icing, AIRMET Tango covers turbulence, and SIGMETs cover the severe end. Those describe regions of airspace over hours.

A military crew is often briefed against a single airfield and a single mission. Putting the hazards into the aerodrome forecast means one message answers the whole question, without cross-referencing three products for the same air.

It also means the hazard forecast is tied to the same change periods as the weather. A TEMPO block can carry its own icing group, so the ice arrives and leaves with the conditions that cause it.

The remarks are the other difference

Civil TAFs rarely say anything about who wrote them. Military ones often do, and those remarks are worth more attention than the coded groups.

AMD NOT SKED means amendments are not scheduled at this field. Nobody will update the forecast if the weather turns, which is close to the opposite of what the wording suggests at a glance.

Metwatch remarks give hours during which coverage is reduced or automated. Last-forecast wording tells you when the service stops entirely.

None of these describe weather. All of them describe how much the weather part should be trusted.

Colour states

Some military forecasts and reports carry a colour state, a single word summing up the airfield.

The scale runs from blue and white at the good end through green, yellow and amber, down to red and black. Each maps to a ceiling and visibility pair, in the same spirit as the civil flight categories.

It is a fast shorthand for a briefing rather than a replacement for the numbers. Where you see one, the ceiling and visibility groups in the body are still the authoritative values.

How to work through one

Take it in two passes. The first pass is the part you know.

Read the header. Read the body. Work out the flight category at your arrival time, the same way you always do. Stop there and you have most of what you need.

The second pass is the trailer. Find the groups that start with 5 and 6. Cut each one after the first digit, the second digit, and the fifth. That gives you a hazard, a base and a thickness.

Then read the remarks. They tell you if the field still has a forecaster on watch.

Nothing in the second pass changes the first. The trailer adds hazards to the picture. It does not alter the wind, the cloud or the visibility.

Read the body exactly as you always have, then work through the trailer.

The trailer is three groups with fixed shapes: 5 for turbulence, 6 for icing, QNH for the altimeter. The remarks tell you whether anybody is still watching the airfield. Nothing in either part changes how the wind, cloud or visibility groups are decoded.
