Reading this map
- Altitude is the filter that matters. Most pilot reports come from airline altitudes. Drag the slider to your cruise level and the map keeps only reports within 2,000 ft of it.
- Colour is severity, from the same scale a PIREP and a military TAF icing group both use.
- Faded dots are older reports. A PIREP describes one moment, and a four-hour-old report of light chop says very little about the air now.
- Hollow dots are negative reports: somebody flew there and found nothing. That is evidence, not an absence of it.
- Shaded areas are SIGMETs and CWAs. A report inside one corroborates it. A report contradicting one is worth a closer look.
